Senior Staff Engineer, Applied AI

Location: Bethesda, Maryland, United States. hirify.global Flex allows working from anywhere in the US for up to four weeks per year.

Annual salary: $130,000–$260,000.

What you will do

• Define architectures and lead implementation of complex, cross-functional AI and ML capabilities.
• Build generative AI solutions including agent-based systems, intelligent automation, document intelligence, and decision-support systems.
• Design agentic workflows coordinating AI agents, tools, APIs, reasoning steps, and business logic.
• Advance RAG, vector reasoning, knowledge graph, and multi-agent solutions for complex business problems.
• Set engineering standards for scalability, reliability, security, compliance, monitoring, interpretability, and responsible AI.
• Influence technical strategy across teams, collaborate with senior leaders, and mentor engineers developing AI and technical leadership skills.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering or applied machine learning experience, including 2+ years with generative AI or LLM systems in production.
• Hands-on expertise with Python, LangChain, LangGraph, LangSmith, LlamaIndex, Hugging Face, OpenAI or Anthropic APIs, and agentic frameworks.
• Experience building production RAG systems with document ingestion, chunking, vector search, and context retrieval.
• Experience designing and operating production AI systems, multi-agent architectures, and workflow orchestration.
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems, microservices, service design, performance optimization, and reliability engineering.
• Ability to influence multiple teams, translate business needs into technical solutions, and mentor engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience with domain-tuned LLMs, specialized retrieval, prompt optimization, knowledge graphs, or graph-based reasoning.
• Background in insurance, financial services, compliance, or risk management.
• Experience with Java AI ecosystems, MLOps, AI safety, evaluation, monitoring, or observability.
• Open-source contributions, technical blogging, or community participation.
