Consultant, Field Underwriter - Commercial Lines (P&C Small Commercial Insurance)

Location: Work from home within the assigned territory of San Diego County and surrounding areas, preferably in or near Northern San Diego; approximately 30–50% travel to agency partners, service centers, and customer business locations is required.

Salary: $104,000–$194,000 annually; expected starting range: $104,000–$156,000.

What you will do

• Underwrite and price complex and specialized commercial risks within expanded authority levels.
• Analyze financials, loss control reports, industry trends, and predictive data to evaluate risk and recommend coverage solutions.
• Manage a field underwriting territory focused on new business production, portfolio mix, and profitability.
• Build relationships with agency partners through in-person meetings, embedded agency support, negotiations, and coverage discussions.
• Monitor market developments, emerging risks, and competitor activity to improve underwriting guidelines, tools, and practices.
• Mentor field underwriters and support product orientation and training for agents and internal teams.

Requirements

• Must live within the assigned San Diego County and surrounding territory.
• At least 6 years of multi-line commercial insurance underwriting experience with underwriting authority; 6–8 years is expected for the role.
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Expert knowledge of commercial underwriting principles, risk management, agency operations, and market dynamics.
• Strong analytical, consultative, communication, and negotiation skills.
• This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization. A safe driving record and ability to travel regularly are required.

Nice to have

• At least 10 years of commercial insurance underwriting experience with authority.
• Field underwriting, territory management, or agency/brokerage experience.
• Insurance designations or coursework such as CPCU, CIC, AU, or ARM.
