Consultant, Field Underwriter - Commercial Lines (P&C Small Commercial Insurance) - San Diego

Location: Work from home within the San Diego County and surrounding territory in California; must live within the assigned territory, preferably in or near Northern San Diego. Requires approximately 30–50% travel to agency partners, service centers, agency offices, and customer business locations.

Salary: $104,000–$194,000 annually hirify.global; expected starting range: $104,000–$156,000.

What you will do

• Independently underwrite and price complex and specialized commercial risks within expanded authority levels.
• Analyze financials, loss control reports, industry trends, and predictive data to assess risk and recommend coverage solutions.
• Manage a field underwriting territory focused on new business production, business mix, underwriting strategy, and profitability.
• Build agency relationships through in-person meetings, agency office engagement, complex negotiations, and coverage discussions.
• Monitor market developments, emerging risks, and competitor activity while contributing to underwriting guidelines, tools, and practices.
• Mentor field underwriters and support product orientation and training for agents and internal teams.

Requirements

• Must live within the assigned San Diego County and surrounding territory.
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• At least 6 years of multiline commercial insurance underwriting experience with underwriting authority; the role description also specifies 6–8 years for complex risks and portfolios.
• Production and agency management orientation, with expert knowledge of commercial underwriting, risk management, and industry exposures.
• Strong analytical, consultative, communication, influencing, and risk evaluation skills.
• Must maintain a safe driving record and be able to travel regularly in the field.

Nice to have

• At least 10 years of commercial insurance underwriting experience with authority.
• Field underwriting or territory management experience.
• Agency or brokerage experience.
• Insurance designations or coursework such as CPCU, CIC, AU, or ARM.
