Staff Engineer – FinOps

Location: Bethesda, Maryland, United States

Annual salary: $110,000–$230,000

What you will do

• Lead FinOps engineering projects focused on cloud cost optimization, budgeting, forecasting, capacity planning, and spend governance.
• Develop optimization and automation strategies, improve spend reporting, define FinOps KPIs, and support process improvements.
• Partner with business leaders, engineers, Controllers, and technology financial controls teams to collect budget requirements and forecast cloud costs.
• Build and maintain budget reports and economic units using business metrics to manage cloud operational expenses.
• Provide technical leadership across full-stack web applications, UI, microservices, backend systems, and cloud/on-premises integrations.
• Deploy web applications in Kubernetes environments and mentor engineers in architecture, design, and implementation.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience with FinOps projects and FinOps concepts.
• 5+ years of experience in budgeting, forecasting, cost savings, and reporting.
• 4+ years of experience with open-source frameworks and cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• 3+ years of experience with cloud architecture, cost optimization, capacity planning, pricing, and performance tuning.
• Experience designing microservices with Python, Django, gRPC, protocol buffers, Kafka, and Apache Spark, including API and event-driven architectures.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or equivalent education or work experience.

Nice to have

• Professional software development or solutions engineering experience with Java, TypeScript, React, Bootstrap, Python, Golang, Docker, Kubernetes, or Terraform.
