Lead Counsel (AI)

Location: San Francisco, California, United States; hybrid work at the San Francisco headquarters

Base salary: $256,000–$300,000 per year, plus equity and bonus opportunities

What you will do

• Lead the Product, Privacy, and IP legal function and serve as embedded product counsel for AI-enabled, agentic, data-intensive, and workflow-integrated products.
• Join product development during roadmap, discovery, design, and testing to identify legal, regulatory, privacy, IP, ethical, and customer trust considerations.
• Build and mature scalable AI governance programs, including review gates, intake and tiering processes, decision records, escalation paths, and monitoring obligations.
• Advise Product and Engineering on privacy-sensitive design, data use and retention, cross-border data flows, security commitments, copyright, trademark, patent, open-source, licensing, and model outputs.
• Support customer-facing and commercial matters involving product, AI, privacy, data, IP, or security issues.
• Convert recurring legal judgments into reusable review rubrics, checklists, templates, playbooks, training, and knowledge systems.

Requirements

• JD from an accredited law school and active bar membership.
• Substantial legal experience spanning a leading law firm and a high-growth technology company; 12+ years preferred, including at least 5 years in-house.
• Deep experience in product counseling or privacy and data protection.
• Experience advising on complex matters involving product design, data, AI systems, emerging regulation, IP, security, and commercial risk.
• Strong understanding of how AI products are built and operated, including model selection, training and evaluation, retrieval, prompt or agentic workflows, human oversight, testing, monitoring, and change management.
• Ability to lead high-stakes cross-functional initiatives and translate technical, legal, and regulatory complexity into clear recommendations and product requirements.
