Staff Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: US - Remote Eligible; must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity. Occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites may be required.

Salary: $212,000–$265,000 USD per year, with potential bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.

What you will do

• Design and evolve core services and data models for account state, eligibility, and entitlements across millions of accounts.
• Translate product concepts into scalable and extensible technical designs with product and design partners.
• Collaborate with Payments and Wallet engineering to ensure credits, discounts, and host-funded programs settle correctly end to end.
• Set technical direction, lead design reviews, mentor engineers, and raise the standard for system design.
• Drive architecture decisions with Identity & Privacy and Profile & Community teams.
• Identify and resolve reliability, scalability, and data-integrity risks.

Requirements

• 9+ years of experience designing and scaling complex distributed backend systems.
• Proven technical leadership in setting architecture direction for a team or domain.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, including data consistency, caching, service decomposition, and API design at scale.
• Experience mentoring senior engineers and influencing technical decisions across multiple teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills across engineering, product, and design.
• Must be based in an eligible US state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity.

Nice to have

• Experience building or operating systems involving financial transactions, entitlements, or other stateful account data.
• Experience working through ambiguity on a newly formed team and defining its scope, roadmap, and technical foundations.
