Hardware Engineering - Sustaining (IoT)

Location: Boston, MA, United States. Office-based or hybrid options are available.

Base salary: $100,000–$150,000 per year.

What you will do

• Own investigations of returns, field failures, crash-reset and brownout loops, registration failures, latent battery shorts, and other field issues, driving confirmed root-cause findings through closure.
• Manage engineering change orders, PCB respins, component substitutions, and revision traceability across the product fleet.
• Handle end-of-life components, second-sourcing, vendor quality escalations, and supplier 8D/SCAR correchirify.global actions.
• Support production issues, yield analysis, DFM feedback, and FATP/SMT line activities, including contract-manufacturer support for US-market products.
• Own the RMA and refurbishment engineering path and feed field-failure patterns back into design and verification.
• Act as the first responder for sustaining issues across product lines, escalating to the owning pod when new design work is required.

Requirements

• BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, with 4+ years of experience in hardware sustaining, NPI, or manufacturing engineering for high-volume electronics.
• Ability to review schematics and PCB designs, read a design, reason about a power tree, and assess the risk of proposed changes.
• Direct contract-manufacturer experience covering DFM, yield, FATP/SMT, and production issue resolution.
• Structured root-cause analysis using 8D, 5-Why, or fishbone methods, with follow-through to close supplier correchirify.global actions.
• Ability to own ambiguous, cross-cutting problems in a distributed team.

Nice to have

• Background in low-power or battery-powered IoT hardware, including familiarity with cellular, GNSS, and BLE devices.
• Hands-on experience with ESP32-class MCUs, cellular modems, fuel gauges and chargers, IMUs, and buck-boost regulators.
• Mandarin language skills and/or China-based experience coordinating with contract manufacturers.
• Experience feeding sustaining insights into verification and design to prevent recurring issues.
