TL;DR
Process Engineer (New Grad December 2026) (AI Manufacturing): Developing and optimizing novel metal additive manufacturing processes by analyzing in situ data, conducting experiments, and evaluating printed material properties with an accent on process physics, metrology, and data-driven iteration. Focus on interpreting large datasets, measuring dimensional accuracy and defects, qualifying tools, and improving industrial-scale 3D printing systems with machine learning.

Location: Los Angeles, California; full-time onsite presence in Hawthorne is required five days a week

Salary: $95,000–$120,000 per year, dependent on academic level and relevant experience

What you will do

  • Analyze large in situ datasets to understand physical mechanisms in metal additive manufacturing.
  • Support experiments, data analysis, and process development on metal additive systems.
  • Perform post-build metrology and analyze tensile strength, surface roughness, and alloy microstructure.
  • Track quality metrics for printed customer parts, including dimensional accuracy, defect distribution, and surface roughness.
  • Assist with tool qualification procedures and collaborate with mechanical, software, and simulation engineers.
  • Help improve printing processes through rapid, data-driven iteration and machine learning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, or a similar engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Strong physics fundamentals and a first-principles approach to problem solving.
  • Coursework or research experience in experimental design and statistical data analysis.
  • Strong data analysis skills, including interpretation of large datasets.
  • Experience with Python and/or MATLAB.
  • Ability to work onsite in Hawthorne five days per week.

Nice to have

  • Master’s or PhD in materials science, physics, or a similar engineering discipline.
  • Research or process development experience in materials, physics, mechanical engineering, semiconductor, solar, or display industries.
  • Experience with R, JMP, or Minitab; complex equipment; or metallurgical sample preparation and optical microscopy.
  • Experience developing new processes from scratch in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.
  • Strong communication skills and demonstrated academic, leadership, or resilience-related achievements.
