AI Engineer (Biology)

Location: hirify.global Heidelberg, Germany; interactions with other hirify.global sites and some international travel are expected.

Salary: Starting from €4,031.02 gross per month, Grade 5–6 depending on relevant experience, plus additional benefits.

What you will do

• Provide shared AI engineering capacity to research groups and teams across hirify.global.
• Design, develop, and deploy machine learning and deep learning models, pipelines, and infrastructure.
• Build robust workflows for model training, evaluation, versioning, serving, and deployment.
• Contribute to shared AI platforms, APIs, and software libraries using large language models, computer vision, and multimodal methods.
• Work directly with experimental and computational scientists to prototype AI solutions that integrate into laboratory and research workflows.
• Publish code, models, and benchmarks while supporting knowledge transfer through clear documentation.

Requirements

• Advanced university degree in computer science, machine learning, mathematics, computational biology, or a related discipline.
• Experience designing and evolving complete AI-enabled systems, including infrastructure, orchestration, model serving, APIs, and user-facing tools.
• Strong systems engineering background with shell environments, distributed systems, networking, and complex deployment debugging.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, GPU environments, model serving frameworks, and observability tooling.
• Experience with large language models, agentic systems, and AI-assisted software development workflows.
• Fluency in spoken and written English, with strong communication skills for technical and scientific stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience applying AI to biological or biomedical data, including genomics, protein structures, bioimage analysis, or single-cell data.
• Familiarity with MLOps tools such as MLflow, Weights & Biases, or Kubeflow.
• Experience with multimodal or foundation models, laboratory automation, or AI-driven experimental design.
• Knowledge of FAIR data principles and experience with open-source software.
• Background in academia, a research institute, or an international organisation; proficiency in other languages.
