Research Engineer, AI Systems

Location: Hybrid with a minimum of 2 in-office days per week in San Francisco, Seattle, New York City, or London; fully remote work is considered for candidates outside the office hub locations.

Annual base salary: $165,000–$310,000 USD, plus discretionary bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Develop and post-train models and improve the systems and workflows used to run, evaluate, debug, and scale training workloads.
• Build software, developer tooling, and platform capabilities for developing, training, and deploying AI systems.
• Contribute features and improvements to open-source projects and collaborate with the broader developer community.
• Work across deep learning systems, backend services, distributed systems, and platform infrastructure.
• Collaborate with customers and cross-functional research, product, and infrastructure teams to turn real-world challenges into reusable product improvements.
• Prototype new ideas, evaluate approaches, and convert successful experiments into production-quality software.

Requirements

• Experience building, training, evaluating, or experimenting with deep learning models.
• Hands-on experience with PyTorch or similar deep learning frameworks.
• Strong software engineering, debugging, and problem-solving fundamentals.
• Ability to learn new technologies quickly and work effectively across research, product, infrastructure, and customer-facing engagements.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Hybrid work requires at least 2 in-office days per week in San Francisco, Seattle, New York City, or London.

Nice to have

• Experience with distributed training, performance optimization, training stability, or large-scale experimentation.
• Experience with transformer-based language models or generative AI systems.
• Familiarity with CUDA, Hugging Face, DeepSpeed, FSDP, Triton, vLLM, SGLang, or related AI infrastructure tools.
• Experience with distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, open-source software, research, or startup environments.
• Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, or a related field.
