Firmware Engineer (FPGA)

Location: Glasgow, United Kingdom; on-site 3–5 times per week, with potential infrequent travel to additional sites

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement VHDL-based FPGA firmware for high-reliability embedded systems in the defence sector.
• Perform firmware architecture design, coding, synthesis, simulation, testing, timing analysis, verification, and validation.
• Collaborate with hardware, systems, and software engineers to integrate FPGA solutions into broader system architectures.
• Support system reviews, documentation, configuration management, and the full development lifecycle.
• Provide technical input and mentorship to junior engineers.

Requirements

• Full right to work in the UK and eligibility for or possession of SC Clearance are required.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical, mechanical, systems engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent military experience.
• 5+ years of firmware or FPGA design experience in defence, aerospace, or safety-critical systems.
• Expertise in FPGA development, including VHDL coding, synthesis, timing closure, and simulation.
• Experience with Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, or Mentor ModelSim.
• Understanding of embedded systems, digital design principles, hardware-software integration, documentation, and the full firmware lifecycle.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with DO-254 or other safety-critical design standards.
• Experience with defence or aerospace-grade hardware development.
• Python or TCL scripting for automation.
• Exposure to configuration management tools such as Git or SVN.
