Junior Software Developer (Embedded Linux)

Location: Hybrid role based in Theale, near Reading, with 3 days per week in the office; candidates must be eligible to work in the UK.

What you will do

• Test communications protocols against fire and intruder alarm panels.
• Investigate communication and product failures in real-world operating conditions.
• Develop tools and tests to verify product performance and reliability.
• Work with product communication with alarm systems and cloud services.
• Implement new communications protocols and features in C and Python as experience grows.

Requirements

• Eligibility to work in the UK.
• Programming ability demonstrated through personal projects, open-source contributions, or substantial technical work.
• Practical understanding of Linux and confidence using the command line.
• Practical networking knowledge, including IP addressing, subnetting, DHCP, routing, and firewall configuration.
• Comfort using Git for normal software development.
• Analytical problem-solving skills and a willingness to investigate unfamiliar technical issues.

Nice to have

• Experience with C, Raspberry Pi or other single-board computers, embedded Linux, or open-source software.
• Practical networking troubleshooting and debugging of complex technical problems.
• Experience with serial communications or other hardware interfaces.
• Ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs.
