Principal BESS Engineer (Battery Energy Storage Systems)

Location: Scottsdale, Arizona, United States; hybrid work with office collaboration typically on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Salary: $140,000–$195,000 USD annual base pay, plus eligibility for an annual cash bonus.

What you will do

• Lead preliminary engineering, optimization, fire safety engineering, technical specifications, and procurement support for utility-scale BESS facilities.
• Develop BESS design requirements, operational strategies, control requirements, CapEx assumptions, auxiliary-load estimates, and augmentation models.
• Evaluate BESS technologies and designs against safety, regulatory, compliance, technical, and commercial requirements.
• Provide subject-matter expertise across origination, development, design, construction, commissioning, and operations.
• Qualify vendors, maintain supply-contract specifications, and support RFQs, technical coordination, requests for information, and division-of-responsibility agreements.
• Support permitting, fire safety compliance, design reviews, construction coordination, commissioning, and lessons-learned improvements.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in BESS engineering, integration, development, and commissioning for utility-scale projects.
• Experience writing technical specifications, performance requirements, and technical reports, with strong technical communication skills.
• Knowledge of UL and IEEE standards, fire safety codes, the National Electrical Code, interconnection standards, and NFPA 855, 72, 68, and 69.
• Knowledge of Power Plant Controllers, EMS, BMS, SCADA, utility communications, telemetry, energy-market applications, and controls platforms.
• Familiarity with TCP/IP, Modbus/TCP, utility equipment specifications, MS Excel, and Python.
• Clearway will not sponsor non-immigrant visas, including H-1B, TN, and E-3.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree.
• Experience with utility electrical power system or distributed energy resource projects.
