Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, Precision Motion Stages (Semiconductor Equipment) (Precision Motion and Vacuum Engineering): Designing and validating multi-degree-of-freedom ultra-precision motion stages for high-vacuum semiconductor inspection equipment with an accent on nanometer-level accuracy, stability, and noise control. Focus on structural, thermal, and vibration FEA, modal testing, metrology integration, and collaboration across controls, systems, manufacturing, and suppliers.

Base pay: $141,300–$240,200 annually

What you will do

  • Design and maintain multi-degree-of-freedom ultra-precision motion stages for high-vacuum eBeam inspection and review platforms.
  • Develop stage structures, flexures, bearings, guides, actuators, metrology interfaces, thermal-management solutions, and vibration-isolation systems.
  • Take designs from requirements definition and detailed CAD through prototyping, validation, qualification, and sustaining.
  • Create detailed drawings with GD&T and perform structural, thermal, vibration/modal FEA and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Build, test, and troubleshoot prototypes, including modal testing with accelerometers and impact hammers.
  • Integrate stages with controls, systems, and manufacturing teams and manage supplier engagement for precision components and subassemblies.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, with experience in motion systems, precision mechanics, or mechatronics.
  • Several years of experience using Creo, SolidWorks, or a similar 3D CAD tool.
  • Experience with structural, thermal, and vibration/modal FEA.
  • Design-for-manufacturing experience covering machining, sheet metal, and castings.
  • Working knowledge of Python or MATLAB for data analysis.
  • Role location: Milpitas, California, USA.

Nice to have

  • Experience with laser interferometers, high-resolution optical encoders, linear motors, linear guides, and air bearings.
  • Experience designing dynamic X-Y sub-micron positioning stages and conducting vibration or modal testing.
  • Semiconductor capital-equipment design experience.
