TL;DR
Telecommunications Solution Architect (Railway Communications): Designing and integrating end-to-end telecommunications solutions across onboard, station, wayside, and control-center environments with an accent on network architecture, radio technologies, interface management, and technical compliance. Focus on defining complex system interfaces, preparing telecom subsystem designs and ICDs, and supporting testing, commissioning, and integration across medium- to large-size railway projects.

Location: Toronto, Ontario; hybrid work mode

Expected compensation: CAD 70,000–120,000 per year, depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.

What you will do

  • Design end-to-end telecommunications solutions across onboard, station, wayside, and control-center environments.
  • Perform requirements analysis, solution architecture, system design, technical compliance, and product selection.
  • Lead interface management across telecommunications subsystems and external systems, including signaling and rolling stock interfaces.
  • Define and document functional, physical, electrical, network, and software interfaces, including protocols, data flows, IP addressing, synchronization, cybersecurity requirements, and ownership.
  • Prepare and maintain Interface Control Documents, conceptual through installation designs, Bills of Materials, and technical documentation.
  • Plan and support design, configuration, testing, commissioning, integration activities, and resolution of technical issues.

Requirements

  • Degree in electrical, electronic, or computer engineering, or information technology.
  • 8–10 years of telecommunications engineering experience and 2–5 years of railway systems engineering experience.
  • Experience managing small- to medium-sized projects and project teams, including RAMS deliverables.
  • Strong knowledge of telecommunications, radio communications, RF allocation, electromagnetic propagation, and RF field-strength measurements.
  • Extensive wired and wireless network design experience, with knowledge of network patterns, constraints, switching, routing, fiber optics, and wireless communications in demanding environments.
  • CCNP or equivalent certification is required; successful criminal background check is also required.

Nice to have

  • Ontario P.Eng. designation.
  • Experience with Passenger Information Systems, railway telecommunications systems, sophisticated test equipment, and testing and commissioning processes.
  • Ability to interpret electrical, electronic, and mechanical drawings and schematics.
