Software Developer III (Scala/Java)

What you will do

• Lead the design, development, testing, and maintenance of backend processors for ingesting, validating, transforming, and distributing real-time weather data.
• Own end-to-end data flows, including production databases, monitoring, operational efficiency, data quality, and incident response.
• Design database schemas, SQL objects, and processing capabilities for new providers, data formats, business requirements, and product features.
• Define reliability, performance, scalability, testing, deployment, and observability standards for backend processing software.
• Align technical solutions with software engineers, data operations, product managers, and business stakeholders.
• Conduct code reviews, document workflows, evaluate technologies, and mentor less experienced developers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience designing and developing backend software or distributed systems.
• Advanced experience with Scala or Java and functional programming concepts.
• Expertise deploying applications in Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
• Deep experience with relational database architecture, schema design, SQL, and performance optimization at scale.
• Experience with XML, JSON, RESTful APIs, regular expressions, external data providers, technical design discussions, and code reviews.

Nice to have

• Experience with event-driven, distributed, or message-based systems.
• Experience with weather, environmental, geospatial, or other Earth science data.
• Experience integrating multiple external data providers or APIs.
• Proficiency with Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Azure.
• Experience providing technical guidance to software developers.
