Staff Software Engineer, Education (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY; hybrid policy requiring staff to work from an office at least 25% of the time

Annual salary: $320,000–$405,000 USD

What you will do

• Architect and own an enterprise-ready education platform covering authentication, SSO, learner data, content delivery, credentialing, and progress tracking.
• Define the technical vision for AI-driven educational experiences and make product-level platform decisions.
• Build AI-augmented pipelines for content generation, real-time adaptation, assessments, and quality assurance.
• Design adaptive learning paths, competency-based progression, and AI-evaluated demonstrations of skill.
• Integrate education systems with security, infrastructure, and data architecture standards.
• Create platform abstractions that let educators and other non-engineers configure and extend learning experiences.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience and a track record of taking platforms from zero to production at scale.
• Strong full-stack skills, particularly in backend systems, databases, APIs, authentication, reliability, and infrastructure.
• Experience operating platforms that reliably serve many concurrent users.
• Ability to translate pedagogical intent into technical architecture and work effectively with ambiguity.
• Experience collaborating with security and infrastructure teams while maintaining development velocity.
• Working experience using AI tools in engineering workflows and genuine interest in AI-native education.

Nice to have

• Experience with learning platforms, credentialing systems, or educational technology products.
• Background in learning science, instructional design, or educational research.
• Experience with SAML, OAuth, Open Badges, or LTI integrations.
• Experience building systems with LLM capabilities as core infrastructure.
• Experience creating configurable platforms for non-technical users.
