TL;DR
Senior Systems Engineer – Software & Autonomy (Robotics): Defining, architecting, integrating, and verifying the software and autonomy stack for commercially scalable humanoid robots with an accent on requirements engineering, system architecture, interfaces, and cross-subsystem integration. Focus on designing verification strategies, establishing measurable performance criteria, and solving complex interactions across perception, navigation, AI, planning, controls, ROS 2, hardware, and safety systems.
Location: UK, London; on-site
Company
develops commercially scalable and safe robots, including the HMND-01 Alpha platform used in industrial pilots.
What you will do
- Translate stakeholder and operational needs into clear, verifiable system and software requirements.
- Define capabilities, functional and logical architecture, system boundaries, responsibilities, dependencies, and interfaces across the software and autonomy stack.
- Coordinate integration across perception, navigation, AI, planning, controls, ROS 2 platform software, firmware, electronics, sensors, actuators, and mechanical systems.
- Define integration stages, readiness criteria, degraded and safe-state behaviours, and system-level verification and validation strategies.
- Lead investigations into complex issues spanning software components, computing, networking, firmware, hardware, and physical robot behaviour.
- Facilitate technical reviews and communicate risks, capability limitations, integration status, and architectural trade-offs to engineering and program leadership.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics, Controls Engineering, or a related field.
- Five or more years of experience in systems engineering, robotics software, software architecture, autonomous systems, or a related technical domain.
- Experience with complex software-intensive or cyber-physical systems and strong knowledge of requirements engineering, architecture, interface management, integration, verification, validation, and traceability.
- Technical experience in several areas including ROS or ROS 2, robotics software, perception and sensor fusion, localization, mapping, navigation, planning, controls, AI or machine learning, simulation, and distributed or real-time software.
- Ability to evaluate software behaviour, define measurable acceptance criteria, and investigate issues across algorithms, software, computing, networking, firmware, sensors, actuators, and physical robot behaviour.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, leadership, and technical communication skills.
Nice to have
- Experience with robots, mobile robots, autonomous vehicles, industrial robotics, or similar systems.
- Familiarity with ROS 2 topics, services, actions, quality-of-service policies, lifecycle management, TF, rosbag, and distributed execution.
- Familiarity with C++, Python, Linux, Git, CI/CD, containers, and modern software development workflows.
- Experience with Isaac Sim, Gazebo, MuJoCo, MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, model-based systems engineering, or software architecture modelling.
- Knowledge of functional safety, SOTIF, machinery safety, cybersecurity, safety assurance, and machine-learning performance or scenario-based validation.
Culture & Benefits
- Stock options with meaningful upside as the company scales.
- 30+ paid days off, including annual leave, UK bank holidays, and company closure days.
- Private healthcare with virtual and in-person care.
- Pension scheme with an 8% total contribution on full earnings.
- Daily breakfast, catered lunch, and snacks in the office.
- Work alongside engineers, researchers, and product experts building AI-enabled robotics.
