Fire Protection Engineer (Battery Energy Storage)

What you will do

• Translate fire code requirements into compliant battery energy storage system product designs and permitting solutions.
• Analyze fire risks, diagnose technical issues, and develop engineering solutions for complex BESS safety challenges.
• Develop code compliance matrices and address local jurisdiction requirements and deficiencies.
• Support testing, validation, permitting reviews, code negotiations, certification efforts, and customer inquiries.
• Develop and deliver training for internal teams, external stakeholders, and fire departments on first-responder actions during thermal events.
• Contribute to technical issue management, industry code committees, and continuous fire protection improvements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent engineering experience.
• 10–15 years of experience in fire protection engineering or a related field.
• Practical experience with fire protection design, fire code compliance documentation, CFD fire modeling, and fire protection permitting.
• Ability to work independently on complex engineering projects and interpret complex fire codes into technical solutions.
• Experience negotiating with Authorities Having Jurisdiction and navigating diverse code environments.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• Experience with large-scale deflagration, explosion, or battery variant testing programs.
• Background in international BESS fire protection certification requirements.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers or providing technical leadership on cross-functional initiatives.
