Field Archaeologist - On-Call (Northern California)

Location: Must be based in Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area, or Northern California; field visits may occur throughout Northern and Central California.

Salary: $50,386–$103,643 annually based on full-time employment.

What you will do

• Assist senior archaeologists with archaeological surveys, testing, evaluations, data recovery, and construction monitoring.
• Conduct fieldwork and identify precontact and historic-period artifacts.
• Take detailed field notes and support archaeological documentation.
• Perform laboratory analysis, background research, and report preparation as assigned.
• Travel for field assignments lasting up to 10 days and work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.
• At least 1 year of field experience in archaeological monitoring and survey.
• Background in precontact or historic-period archaeology.
• Valid driver’s license and successful completion of a Motor Vehicle Records check.
• Ability to communicate and coordinate with senior staff and construction personnel.
• Ability to conduct field visits throughout Northern and Central California.

Nice to have

• Field experience in Northern and Central California.
• Cross-training in paleontological monitoring.
• Mission-era experience or training.
• Osteology experience or training.
• Active 40-hour HAZWOPER training.
