Bioinformatics Engineer II (Python)

Location: Remote - California

Salary: $90,000–$140,000 USD per year

What you will do

• Drive technical solutions from ideation through release, including process design, estimation, and complexity assessment.
• Design and develop custom software based on ticket specifications.
• Mentor junior engineers and set standards for technical excellence.
• Provide clear feedback through code reviews and collaborate with clients, partners, product owners, and stakeholders.
• Identify development blockers, monitor processes, log information, and troubleshoot issues.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related field with at least 5 years of work experience; or a Master’s degree with at least 2 years of experience; or a PhD.
• Proficiency in Python and intermediate-to-advanced experience with Linux environments.
• Intermediate-to-advanced experience with relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL Server.
• Experience with Git, unit testing, documentation, and software engineering best practices.
• Knowledge of next-generation sequencing technologies and bioinformatics formats including FASTQ, BAM, VCF, and GTF.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud and Atlassian tools.
• Knowledge of clinical genetics databases, HGVS nomenclature, biology, and mutation analysis.
• Experience creating Docker containers, developing APIs, and implementing CI/CD pipelines.
