Sr. Data Scientist, Translational Research (AI)

Location: Chicago, United States

Salary: $100,000–$175,000 annually; the stated range applies to California and may vary for Colorado, Illinois, and New York.

What you will do

• Lead technical and scientific onboarding for clients using the Tempus Data Ecosystem and Lens analytical platform.
• Understand researchers’ hypotheses involving biomarker discovery, target identification, and clinical trial design.
• Design workflows, structure queries, and guide analysis of genomic, clinical, imaging, and other biomedical datasets.
• Use LLMs, co-pilot tools, and specialized AI agents to improve scientific data exploration and client workflows.
• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Data Science teams to prioritize features and resolve technical challenges.
• Create technical documentation, tutorials, and training materials for scientific analysis.

Requirements

• Master’s or Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomics, Data Science, or a related life science discipline.
• Experience analyzing large-scale biomedical datasets, including next-generation sequencing, clinical trial, or real-world data.
• Experience with statistical modeling, data mining, and/or machine learning methods.
• Fluency in Python or R; candidates whose primary language is Python must also have some R coding experience.
• Experience with software development, AWS or GCP, Docker, Git, GitHub, Linux, and cloud computing.
• Experience building LLM-based workflows or specialized AI agents, deploying data science workflows, and explaining complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice to have

• Biotech, pharmaceutical, healthcare technology, or oncology research experience.
• Experience with Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn, Jupyter, RStudio, tidyverse, ggplot, visualization libraries, Flask, Dask, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, or D3.
