Lead Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Must be based in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Relocation assistance is not available. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $128,470–$208,770 per year

What you will do

• Lead the design and development of enterprise-scale REST APIs and microservices using Java, Spring Boot, and AWS.
• Define API contracts, payload schemas, and OpenAPI/Swagger specifications for API-first solutions.
• Guide the implementation of secure and scalable integrations using OAuth 2.0, JWT, and enterprise authorization models.
• Translate business requirements into technical designs, user stories, and implementation plans while leading design and code reviews.
• Drive reliability, scalability, observability, security, maintainability, automated testing, and performance engineering.
• Own the full software lifecycle, including deployment, monitoring, production support, documentation, and operational runbooks.

Requirements

• Extensive experience developing RESTful APIs and microservices with Java 21+ and Spring Boot; experience with Apigee is beneficial.
• Experience designing, deploying, and operating applications in AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience writing unit, integration, and end-to-end automated tests using tools such as JUnit and Mockito.
• Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging technologies such as Kafka, Kinesis, SQS, SNS, RabbitMQ, or Azure Event Hub.
• Knowledge of relational, NoSQL, caching, search, and vector databases, including PostgreSQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch, and Redis.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Agile development, technical leadership, design reviews, and production troubleshooting.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI-assisted coding tools such as GitHub Copilot or Cursor.
