TL;DR
Senior Multiphysics Modeling Engineer (Fusion): Developing and validating coupled thermal–mechanical–fluid models for fusion hardware with an accent on high-temperature ceramic and metallic components, pulsed-load systems, and simulation–experiment correlation. Focus on verification and validation, uncertainty quantification, material damage modeling, HPC simulations, and translating model results into design guidance and operating limits.

Location: On-site in Everett, Washington, United States

Salary: $200,000–$236,000 per year

Company

hirify.global is a fusion power company developing the Polaris prototype and pursuing the construction of the Orion fusion power plant to provide clean electricity.

What you will do

  • Develop and maintain multiphysics models, primarily in MOOSE, for high-temperature ceramic and metallic components, plasma- and power-facing structures, and pulsed-load systems.
  • Simulate coupled thermal, structural, and electromagnetic behavior under rapid cyclic loading, high heat flux, and large temperature gradients.
  • Implement and calibrate constitutive models for fatigue damage, fracture, and degradation in extreme environments.
  • Perform verification and validation through convergence studies, calibration experiments, and systematic comparison of model predictions with experimental data.
  • Apply uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis to support life predictions, design margins, material allowables, and operating envelopes.
  • Translate modeling results into design guidance and help establish modeling standards, documentation, and reproducible workflows for key components and failure modes.

Requirements

  • PhD, or MS with significant experience, in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or a related computational field.
  • 5+ years of experience in multiphysics finite element or finite volume modeling of coupled thermal–mechanical systems.
  • Experience modeling irradiated materials or materials exposed to severely degrading environments such as plasma, fusion, fission, or high-flux/high-dose conditions.
  • Proficiency with an advanced multiphysics platform such as MOOSE, Abaqus, COMSOL, ANSYS, BISON, OpenMC, or MCNP, with willingness to work in MOOSE.
  • Experience with verification and validation against experimental data, HPC environments, parallel computing, and job scheduling.
  • Programming or scripting skills in Python, C++, or comparable languages, plus the ability to communicate assumptions, limitations, and uncertainties to non-modelers.

Culture & Benefits

  • Cross-functional collaboration with materials scientists, test engineers, and mechanical designers.
  • Medical, dental, and vision plans for employees and families.
  • 31 days of PTO, including 21 vacation days and 10 sick days, plus 10 paid holidays and a company-wide winter break.
  • Up to 5% employer 401(k) match, disability and life insurance, and paid parental leave of up to 16 weeks.
  • Annual wellness stipend and a work environment emphasizing urgency, rigor, ownership, and clear communication.
