TL;DR
Electro-Optical Engineer (Sensor Systems): Developing spacecraft sensor products from clean-sheet architecture through qualification and production with an accent on multidisciplinary design, verification, and manufacturing readiness. Focus on leading qualification campaigns, performing trade studies and root-cause investigations, and integrating sensor solutions across optics, avionics, software, GNC, manufacturing, and mission assurance.

Location: Los Angeles, California, USA; in-person work at the Playa Vista office

What you will do

  • Own sensor products across conceptualization, architecture, design, analysis, prototyping, qualification, and production.
  • Act as the hardware Responsible Engineering Authority and provide technical guidance and documentation for production issues.
  • Lead verification and validation activities, including test plans, procedures, reports, qualification campaigns, and test-station development.
  • Perform failure investigations and root-cause analyses, applying lessons learned to future designs and test approaches.
  • Conduct system- and component-level trade studies balancing performance, cost, schedule, and technical risk.
  • Collaborate with structures, thermal, optics, avionics, software, GNC, manufacturing, mission assurance, and supply chain teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, optical, mechanical, or computer engineering, software engineering, applied physics, or a related discipline.
  • Hands-on experience developing, prototyping, integrating, or testing multidisciplinary systems.
  • Experience owning hardware, projects, or products.
  • Strong understanding of test engineering fundamentals and methodologies.
  • Leadership, time-management, organizational, research, and clean-sheet architecture skills.
  • Self-motivated approach to working in a fast-paced, collaborative engineering environment.

Nice to have

  • 1–2 years of experience in aerospace, automotive, or technical product development and testing.
  • Master’s degree in a related engineering or applied physics discipline.
  • Experience with sensor systems, satellite systems, space environments, hardware product lifecycles, or Design for Manufacturing principles.
  • Familiarity with project management tools and techniques.
