Senior Software Engineer (Robotics)

Location: Irvine, California, United States. On-site work with physical robots and real hardware.

Salary: $160,000–$220,000 per year, plus benefits and equity participation.

What you will do

• Own the behavior and mission layer that turns autonomy capabilities into repeatable, reliable customer-facing missions.
• Architect mission definition and execution, behavior orchestration, fallback strategies, and recovery behaviors for unstructured environments.
• Design and build human-robot interaction behaviors and operator-facing systems.
• Validate behaviors on physical robotic platforms in customer conditions and use field data to improve the product.
• Lead design reviews, make architecture decisions, and mentor engineers.
• Collaborate with autonomy, perception, product, field deployment, and customer-facing teams.

Requirements

• Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field.
• Significant production software experience at a senior level, typically 5+ years, including meaningful robotics or autonomy work.
• Expert-level Python and C++ skills.
• Deep hands-on experience with ROS2, including custom nodes and complex production robot systems.
• Experience with behavior trees, state machines, task or mission planning, and execution.
• Strong system design skills across APIs, IPC, middleware, networking, and real-time data pipelines.

Nice to have

• Experience deploying robotic software in industrial production environments.
• Background in robotics reasoning, planning, or human-robot interaction.
• Experience with fleet management, multi-robot coordination, perception, or machine learning.
• Experience optimizing computationally constrained platforms for real-time performance.
• Understanding of robotics safety standards and compliance.
