Payroll Lead

Location: Seattle, WA; expected to work from the Seattle offices

Salary: $89,500–$134,000 base annually, plus bonus plans

What you will do

• Own end-to-end biweekly US payroll across up to 20 states, including tax withholding, SUTA rates, local compliance, and employee support.
• Manage international payroll for employees in 5–10 countries through EOR partners, including onboarding, invoices, employment changes, and provider relationships.
• Optimize HRIS integrations with ATS, 401(k), and expense systems to reduce manual work and improve accuracy.
• Build AI-assisted payroll dashboards and lead analysis of cost trends, anomalies, and headcount data.
• Perform payroll tax, benefits, workers’ compensation, 401(k), quarterly, and annual reconciliations and filings.
• Maintain audit-ready documentation, internal controls, SOPs, and process improvements.

Requirements

• 4+ years of progressive payroll experience, including ownership of multi-state payroll across 10 or more states.
• Experience with modern payroll or HRIS platforms and system integrations.
• Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP, and large-data reconciliation.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax, wage and hour, and compliance requirements.
• Strong attention to detail, discretion with confidential information, ownership of deadlines, and effective cross-functional communication.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States; the employer participates in E-Verify.

Nice to have

• International payroll or EOR experience with providers such as Remote or Deel.
• Payroll GL accounting and cost allocation experience, particularly in a grant-funded or nonprofit environment.
• CPP or FPC certification.
• Experience creating SOPs and process documentation from scratch.
