Senior Patent Attorney

Location: South San Francisco, California; hybrid with three days onsite and two days remote

Salary: $255,000–$312,000 annual starting salary for successful US-based applicants

What you will do

• Prepare and prosecute US and foreign patent applications across therapeutic programs and the machine-learning platform.
• Develop and evolve IP strategy, manage the asset lifecycle, and oversee patent, trademark, and trade-secret portfolios.
• Lead freedom-to-operate, patentability, validity, and infringement analyses and provide IP counseling to scientific and business teams.
• Monitor competitor filings, publications, and pipeline developments and translate findings into recommendations for corporate strategy and business development.
• Partner with R&D teams on invention capture, publication review, ownership, inventorship, assignments, and prevention of premature disclosure.
• Manage outside counsel, foreign associates, the IP budget, docketing, information-disclosure statements, and IP due diligence for transactions.

Requirements

• J.D., active state bar membership, and USPTO registration through the patent bar.
• Ph.D. in a life-science field.
• 8–10+ years of experience as a patent attorney with substantial pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical patent preparation and prosecution experience.
• Experience with written-description and enablement strategy, offensive claiming, freedom-to-operate analysis, licensing, and secondary patents.
• Broad IP experience covering patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyright, including partnerships, licensing, or business transactions.
• Ability to work closely with scientists and engineers and use or learn AI tools and workflows.

Nice to have

• Deep expertise in nucleic-acid or antibody therapeutics.
• Working knowledge of AI and machine-learning methods used in drug discovery.
