Location: Remote within the United States; infrequent in-person meetings may be required at the client site in McLean, Virginia. Job location listed as Reston, Virginia, United States of America.
Salary: $61,232β$104,094 per year based on full-time employment.

What you will do
- Lead the editorial process for high-visibility technical documents, reports, manuals, publications, and web-based products.
- Perform substantive editing, copy editing, proofreading, formatting, fact checking, reference checking, and final publication reviews.
- Transform complex engineering terminology, raw data, and technical concepts into clear and accessible content for technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Coordinate authors, reviewers, subject matter experts, program managers, and stakeholders throughout the document lifecycle.
- Ensure compliance with agency style guides, publication standards, branding requirements, copyright rules, and Section 508 accessibility guidance.
- Provide editorial leadership, mentoring, and quality oversight to junior editors and project staff while managing multiple deadlines.
Requirements
- Master's degree in English, Journalism, or a technical field.
- 10+ years of experience in technical editing, proofreading, copy editing, substantive editing, project management, and staff supervision.
- At least 10 years of experience applying the Government Publishing Office Style Manual and government or agency-specific editorial standards.
- Experience editing and reviewing complex technical information and publications for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and completeness.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
- Must be able to work remotely within the United States and attend infrequent meetings in McLean, Virginia.
Nice to have
- Experience supporting federal government agencies and federal publications.
- Transportation industry experience, especially highway and surface transportation.
- Experience editing engineering, research, scientific, policy, or other highly technical documentation.
- Experience with Adobe Acrobat Pro, CommonLook, Section 508 accessibility, online publishing, and web publishing.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Smartsheet, Basecamp, or Trello.
