Java Backend Developer with AI Integration (Java/Quarkus/AI): Building scalable backend services, APIs, microservices, and automated tests for an AI-assisted software development environment with an accent on code quality, testing, CI/CD optimization, and AI tool integration. Focus on integrating LLM-based workflows, diagnosing pipeline issues, and designing reliable backend systems with emerging AI tools.
Location: Porto, Portugal — hybrid, with up to 3 remote days per week. Applicants must already have the legal right to work in the European Union.

is hiring for a technology client focused on AI-assisted software development and backend engineering.
What you will do
- Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services, APIs, and microservices using Java and Quarkus.
- Integrate AI-assisted development tools such as GitLab Duo and Claude Code into coding, testing, and code review workflows.
- Develop automated unit and integration tests for reliable backend systems.
- Troubleshoot and optimize CI/CD pipelines using AI-assisted diagnostics and root-cause analysis.
- Collaborate with backend engineers, QA, and product managers to deliver well-tested software.
- Maintain code quality, participate in reviews, and evaluate emerging AI development practices.
Requirements
- 4+ years of hands-on backend development experience.
- Strong Java skills and experience designing reliable, scalable APIs and microservices.
- Experience with automated backend testing and AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, GitLab Duo, or Claude Code.
- Ability to understand business context, solve complex technical problems, and manage multiple priorities.
- Communicative English proficiency is required.
- Existing legal right to work in the European Union is required.
Nice to have
- Experience with LLM-based integrations, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, or agent orchestration workflows.
- Familiarity with MCP or similar AI system integration tools.
- Exposure to AI-native development, spec-driven development, or automation workflows.
- Quarkus experience.
