Manager, Applied Science (AI)

Location: New York City office; in-office work required three days per week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday

Salary: $300,000–$390,000 target base compensation annually, plus equity and benefits

What you will do

• Lead, hire, coach, and develop a team of Applied Scientists.
• Own the team roadmap, delivery priorities, technical direction, and production outcomes.
• Choose and apply machine learning, optimization, heuristics, expert systems, or hybrid approaches.
• Define evaluation metrics, validate solutions before launch, and monitor real-world performance.
• Build algorithms that improve provider tiering, total-cost-of-care savings, member steerage, and engagement.
• Translate ambiguous business goals into clear problem definitions with Research, Product, Engineering, and business stakeholders, and present results to senior leadership.

Requirements

• 6+ years of industry experience as an Applied Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, Research Scientist, or equivalent, or 4+ years with a relevant advanced degree; PhD preferred.
• Deep technical credibility and willingness to remain hands-on with code, data, and algorithmic decisions.
• Strong judgment selecting statistical models, heuristics, optimization methods, and simpler algorithmic approaches.
• Strong applied problem-solving skills, including defining meaningful metrics and delivering measurable improvements.
• Ability to prototype quickly, communicate effectively at the executive level, and align cross-functional stakeholders.
• Willingness to work from the New York City office three days per week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
