TL;DR
Principal Data Scientist (AI/digital pathology): Developing oncology-based digital pathology AI models from whole-slide image data to predict clinical outcomes and pathological features with an accent on biological explainability, statistical modeling, and clinical evidence generation. Focus on adapting foundation models, leading technical projects, coordinating annotations and datasets, and translating complex analyses for diagnostic products and peer-reviewed publications.

Location: Remote for candidates based in the United States or Canada. On-site desk space is available in South San Francisco or San Diego.

Salary: $188,000–$210,000 USD for US-based candidates; $160,000–$182,000 for Canada-based candidates.

What you will do

  • Develop digital pathology AI models using whole-slide image data to predict clinical outcomes and pathological or morphological features.
  • Adapt state-of-the-art open-source AI foundation models to hirify.global and collaborator datasets.
  • Identify appropriate data sources and lead efforts to obtain annotations and machine-learning labels.
  • Break down complex data and machine-learning problems into actionable projects, delegate work to junior team members, and track deliverables as technical lead.
  • Collaborate with clinical, business, bioinformatics, statistical, medical, and external partners to tailor algorithms and research questions.
  • Document analyses, create visualizations, and support evidence generation for diagnostic products and peer-reviewed publications.

Requirements

  • PhD in Data Science, Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics, or an equivalent field.
  • 8+ years of experience in data science or applied science, preferably in cancer or another disease-related field.
  • Expertise in Python or an equivalent language for AI/ML development, computer vision, and data preparation.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis, including survival modeling, hypothesis testing, and multivariate regression with interaction effects.
  • Experience with cloud computing environments, preferably AWS, and the ability to communicate AI/ML findings through presentations, figures, and academic writing.
  • Technical leadership and employee management experience, including breaking down complex problems into delegable projects.

Nice to have

  • Experience as a technical leader or manager.
  • Experience with documentation and submissions in regulated diagnostic environments such as LDT or IVD.
  • Experience working with real-world clinical data and evidence.
