Payments Operations Lead (Fintech)

Location: New York City, United States; onsite five days a week at the Soho office.

Salary: $130,000–$150,000 per year plus equity.

What you will do

• Build the payments operations function, selecting systems, defining architecture, and hiring the future team.
• Own merchant risk management, including risk registers, detection triggers, remediation paths, reserves, holdbacks, and escalation thresholds.
• Run daily reconciliation across balance accounts and settlement, including alerting and break investigations.
• Set fraud, AML, merchant acceptance, and payment-partner risk policies.
• Build merchant-facing dispute and chargeback self-service workflows and own outcomes.
• Scale merchant underwriting, onboarding, sign-up, and acquirer migration as volume grows.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in payments operations, risk, fraud, or dispute operations.
• At least 2 years at a payment facilitator, processor, or platform such as Stripe Connect, Adyen for Platforms, Square/Block, Shopify Payments, or similar.
• Experience building payment processes and operating mechanics for reserves, holdbacks, offset rights, and merchant balances.
• Working knowledge of ACH returns and card chargebacks, including return handling and payer-notification workflows.
• Strong systems thinking, metrics-driven decision-making, and the ability to collaborate across Legal, Engineering, Finance, and payment partners.
• Ability to work onsite in New York City five days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience scaling merchant-facing dispute self-service.
• Experience supporting an acquirer migration involving live merchant volume.
• Familiarity with B2B billing or invoicing platforms and their risk profiles.
• Experience with treasury or banking-partner relationship management.
