Senior Payments Operations Lead (Fintech)

Location: New York City, NY; 5 days per week in-office for candidates in the tri-state region, with remote work available outside the region

What you will do

• Build and operate the initial payments operations program, including policies, controls, runbooks, decision rights, and escalation paths.
• Design merchant-risk and reserve strategies covering segmentation, acceptance criteria, monitoring, exceptions, and reserve releases.
• Own daily financial integrity and reconciliation across processors, banks, ledgers, and merchant settlements.
• Run ACH returns, card disputes and chargebacks, fraud reviews, negative-balance management, merchant holds, and incident processes.
• Define risk and operations KPIs, thresholds, alerts, investigations, and service levels.
• Partner with Product, Engineering, Support, commercial teams, Legal, and payment partners to scale operations and build automation.

Requirements

• Typically 7+ years of experience in payments operations, merchant risk, fraud, disputes, or an adjacent function; candidates with 5+ years and clear end-to-end ownership may be considered.
• Experience at a payment facilitator, processor, acquirer, bank, platform payments business, or B2B fintech.
• Demonstrated ownership of consequential payments-risk or operating outcomes.
• Strong knowledge of merchant-risk assessment, reserve mechanics, ACH returns, card disputes, chargebacks, reconciliation, fraud controls, negative balances, and payment-partner operations.
• Experience building or materially improving payment processes, control environments, or operating programs.
• Ability to lead cross-functional work and operate hands-on in an early-stage environment while building scalable systems.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of card acquiring mechanics, including interchange, network rules, chargebacks, and settlement.
• Experience with B2B payments, billing, invoicing, merchant underwriting, reserve policy, or portfolio monitoring.
• Experience with dispute self-service, acquirer or processor migrations, treasury, banking partners, or vendor relationships.
• Background in cross-border payments, multi-currency flows, or international money movement.
• Interest in AI-enabled operational tools and replacing manual workflows with scalable automation.
