Lead Software Engineer (Storage)

Location: Remote within the US, no more than three time zones away from San Mateo, California, with occasional visits to San Mateo required.

Base pay: $205,000–$230,000 for non-Bay Area locations; $245,000–$265,000 for Bay Area locations, annually.

What you will do

• Lead technical design discussions and produce clear design documentation.
• Drive implementation of large features for the storage platform.
• Develop host-managed SMR support while optimizing storage throughput and costs.
• Benchmark I/O performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement improvements.
• Shape coding methodologies and software engineering best practices.
• Work across design, implementation, testing, and rollout in a remote environment.

Requirements

• 10+ years of object-oriented programming experience in an enterprise environment, with a strong backend focus.
• Experience building host-managed SMR support for storage systems.
• Experience developing large-scale software systems running across thousands of servers.
• Experience benchmarking I/O performance and resolving bottlenecks.
• Professional experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Gemini, Cursor, or Claude Code.
• Must be based in the US within three time zones of San Mateo and able to visit San Mateo occasionally.

Nice to have

• Experience improving CPU and I/O performance.
• Familiarity with hard drive performance and optimization.
• Experience building and interpreting models, dashboards, or reports.
• Understanding of Linux internals and file systems.
