Senior Mechanical Engineer (Maritime Robotics)

Location: San Diego, California, United States. This is an onsite role. Candidates must be independently authorized to work in the United States and qualify as U.S. persons under applicable export control laws.

Salary: $150,000–$180,000 per year, plus stock options, 401(k) matching, and other benefits.

What you will do

• Design parts, assemblies, fixtures, tooling, and jigs for current and future unmanned surface vessel products, including the Heavyfish product line.
• Create prototypes, develop CAD models, review and detail designs, and manage CAD configuration.
• Plan project timelines, own key milestones, and shape mechanical engineering and organizational processes.
• Source parts, communicate with suppliers and fabricators, manage vehicle BOMs, and evaluate production and procurement options.
• Assemble and quality-check incoming supplier parts, test vehicle component designs, and improve production speed and efficiency.
• Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with engineering leadership and internal teams.

Requirements

• 5–7+ years of experience working on high-performance and/or high-volume parts in a team environment.
• Expertise in SolidWorks and a deep understanding of mechanical engineering, structures, assembly, DFM trade-offs, and fabrication methods.
• Extensive maritime experience through work and/or activities on and around the ocean.
• Understanding of how CNC milling, 3D printing, waterjet, and other manufacturing processes affect design.
• Experience working in smaller mechanical engineering teams, startups, competitions, or similarly tight-timeline settings.
• Ability to work autonomously, take a napkin sketch through an iterative CAD design process, and execute against key milestones.
• Experience outsourcing parts to external vendors and fabricators, including supplier communication and follow-up.
• Strong communication and organizational skills, including vendor coordination, BOM tracking, and procurement follow-up.
• Basic understanding of electrical and software needs for electromechanical systems, plus experience with combustion engines and hybrid systems.
