TL;DR
Staff Mechanical Engineer, Powertrain Engineering (Marine): Leading the design and integration of high-voltage electromechanical powertrain systems for electric vessels from concept through production with an accent on power distribution architecture, thermal and structural engineering, and manufacturability. Focus on designing high-voltage assemblies, guiding multidisciplinary engineers, validating systems through sea trials, and resolving complex field issues.
Location: Full-time, on-site role in Torrance, California, at the Los Angeles headquarters. Occasional travel of approximately 15% is required for testing, validation, suppliers, and field operations.
Base salary: $185,000 annually, plus equity grants and semi-annual impact-based bonuses.
Company
Arc is electrifying the marine industry by developing electric powertrains, software, and vessel platforms for consumer, commercial, tug, ferry, and defense applications.
What you will do
Lead the development of complex electromechanical systems across multiple vessel programs from concept through production.
Own high-voltage, high-power distribution architecture across mechanical, electrical, thermal, and manufacturing domains.
Direct packaging of high-voltage assemblies, including power conversion cabinets and AC distribution systems, for manufacturability, serviceability, and marine conditions.
Establish methods and standards for busbar design, thermal sizing, structural analysis, shock and vibration analysis, and harness and fluid routing.
Drive requirements, technical scope, design decisions, and trade-offs while identifying blockers early.
Mentor engineers and lead technical collaboration with suppliers, shipyards, manufacturing teams, vessel operators, and field-testing teams.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
8+ years of experience owning complete mechanical or electromechanical systems from initial design through production, including technical leadership of multidisciplinary systems.
Strong knowledge of high-voltage electrical systems, power electronics, HV enclosure and busbar design, structural engineering, and thermal engineering.
Experience with CAD tools such as NX, CATIA, or SolidWorks, and analysis tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, or FEA packages.
Deep expertise in manufacturing methods, design for manufacturability, hardware prototyping, production debugging, and troubleshooting.
Experience mentoring engineers, communicating technical trade-offs, and working hands-on in the field, including on boats and at shipyards.
Nice to have
Experience with commercial vessels or marine systems, including Coast Guard and ABS regulations.
Experience with fluid system design, high-voltage batteries, power conversion, or power distribution integration.
Experience with sheet metal manufacturing, CNC machining, composites, shop tools, GD&T, NX, or Teamcenter.
Enthusiasm for boating, marine systems, and the water.
Culture & Benefits
Healthcare benefits with 99% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage.
14 weeks of fully paid parental leave, competitive PTO, life insurance, disability insurance, and traditional and Roth 401(k) access.
$500 annual water fund, $500 annual professional development reimbursement, monthly AI stipend, and annual safety equipment reimbursement.
Captain training and access to Arc boats, plus daily lunches, snacks, and coffee while onsite.
Relocation assistance may be available depending on role eligibility.
Values include ownership, empathy, humility, pragmatism, and inclusion.
Hiring process
