Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer - Continuous Improvement (Robotics Actuation): Refining and improving actuator products through hardware defect analysis, root cause investigations, and Engineering Change Orders, with an accent on product maturation, reliability, and manufacturability. Focus on diagnosing field and manufacturing failures, implementing permanent BOM updates, and guiding actuation technology improvements across global production partners.

Location: Waltham, Massachusetts, United States. The role requires 10–20% international travel to support global suppliers and manufacturing partners. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $135,000–$167,000 base pay annually.

What you will do

  • Investigate actuator hardware defects and manufacturing issues with production teams, test teams, and overseas manufacturing partners.
  • Synthesize defect data from production environments using tools such as Jira to assess actuator product maturity.
  • Lead hands-on failure analysis and root cause/corrective action investigations for manufacturing and on-robot failures.
  • Propose and execute design changes through Engineering Change Orders to improve reliability and manufacturability.
  • Manage the actuation product and technology roadmap, evaluating improvements and technologies for future product generations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Typically 7+ years of experience in design, systems, or sustaining engineering.
  • Experience scaling products from low-volume in-house builds to high-volume overseas manufacturing.
  • Strong root cause analysis and hardware problem-solving skills for complex electromechanical assemblies.
  • Experience with product launches, Engineering Change Orders, and Design for Manufacturability/Assembly principles.
  • Ability to independently manage complex projects and communicate across engineering, production, testing, and manufacturing organizations.

Nice to have

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD, preferably CATIA.
  • Experience with Arena or ENOVIA PLM systems.
  • Familiarity with Jira, JAMA, or Smartsheet.
  • Experience mentoring others and establishing technical best practices.
