TL;DR
Research Assistant/ Technician (Ecology): Supporting terrestrial large-mammal ecology research through camera-trap data processing, database management, literature reviews, and laboratory coordination with an accent on animal behavior, species interactions, and human disturbance. Focus on analyzing and quality-controlling research data, maintaining scientific protocols, and independently prioritizing complex technical and administrative work.
Location: Onsite at the Vancouver Campus in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Part-time position at 0.5 FTE for 8 months, ending April 30, 2027.
Salary: CAD 4,696–5,140 per month; this 0.5 FTE position is paid at 50% of the posted range.

What you will do
- Organize and maintain physical and digital lab resources, equipment, supplies, inventories, and research databases.
- Process raw research data, including camera-trap images, and perform data quality control.
- Conduct literature reviews supporting projects on terrestrial large-mammal behavior, community ecology, and human disturbance.
- Develop and update biosafety and animal-use protocols, prepare expense reports, and complete related administrative work.
- Maintain the lab website, manual, and social media while supporting hiring and supervising junior research staff.
- Train undergraduate students in camera-trap annotation and relevant computer applications.
Requirements
- High school graduation, additional related training, and at least two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of ecology, data science, animal behavior, and experimental design.
- Ability to analyze problems, maintain accurate records, manage multiple deadlines, and work independently with limited direction.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work calmly and courteously with diverse people in both independent and team settings.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and to continuous development of related awareness and skills.
Nice to have
- B.Sc. or equivalent degree in a relevant biological discipline.
- Experience with camera-trap data, TrapTagger, R, GitHub, and Microsoft Office.
- Skill in identifying southern African large mammals and knowledge of African savanna ecology.
