Entry Level Technology Designer

TL;DR

Entry Level Technology Designer (AutoCAD/Revit): Producing construction drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, and technology system documentation for commercial and institutional building projects with an accent on structured cabling, networking, security, audiovisual, and smart building systems. Focus on translating client requirements into functional designs, coordinating with electrical and mechanical engineers, and developing expertise in building technology standards.

Location: Hybrid role based in Chicago, Illinois, USA. No travel required.

Salary: $50,000–$70,000 per year, plus performance-based bonuses.

What you will do

• Translate client requirements into programming guides, floor plans, wiring schematics, elevations, details, and construction specifications.
• Set up drawings, complete markups, prepare equipment schedules, and maintain accurate project documentation.
• Survey existing buildings and identify technology systems and components.
• Review equipment submittals for compliance with contract documents and industry standards.
• Observe technology construction work in progress and report findings.
• Coordinate with senior engineers, senior designers, and electrical and mechanical project team members.

Requirements

• 0–3 years of relevant experience.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Interest in electrical and building technology systems.
• Experience with AutoCAD and Revit preferred; willingness to develop expert proficiency required.
• Strong documentation, note-taking, time management, and attention-to-detail skills.
• Ability to follow verbal and written direction, ask questions, and learn under the guidance of senior designers and engineers.

Nice to have

• Progress toward or completion of BICSI, AVIXA, or ASIS certification.
• Interest or experience in structured cabling, networking, Wi-Fi, security systems, audiovisual systems, or smart buildings.
