Senior Backend Engineer (Python)

Location: Hybrid work in Hamburg or Berlin, Germany. Work from abroad is available for up to 30 calendar days per year.

What you will do

• Design and build a typed, versioned scoring engine based on deterministic computation graphs.
• Model formula trees, categorical mappings, peer-group selection, and comparability adjustments as declarative versioned data.
• Own system lineage, immutable execution records, versioning, and end-to-end auditability.
• Develop typed internal services, APIs, and schemas for methodology workbenches and downstream applications.
• Establish golden file, property-based, regression, and other testing practices to prevent calculation drift.
• Set architectural standards, guide trade-offs, review code, and mentor engineers.

Requirements

• Deep expertise in expression trees and dependency graphs, including ASTs, DAGs, cycle detection, topological sorting, memoization, and selective recomputation.
• Advanced Python skills with strict typing, clean packaging, and disciplined testing practices.
• Experience building auditable and reproducible systems with versioned schemas and explicit data lineage.
• Experience modeling business logic as versioned data through typed schemas, rules engines, expression trees, or domain-specific configurations.
• Ability to design, version, and operate production backend APIs and schemas.
• 5+ years of backend software engineering experience, plus a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, software engineering, applied mathematics, or a related quantitative field. Fluent English is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with FastAPI or similar asynchronous frameworks and Dagster, Prefect, or Airflow.
• Performance profiling of memory, CPU, or query efficiency on columnar data warehouses.
• Experience deploying and operating containerized calculation microservices on AWS.
• Healthcare, benchmarking, hospital rating, medical classification, or complex scoring methodology experience.
• German language skills.
