Legal Counsel - Content Safety, Product & Privacy (AI)

Location: Applications are accepted from Austin or San Francisco, USA, or from candidates open to relocating to either location. Collaboration across global time zones is required. Interviews are conducted virtually.

Salary: $190,000–$290,000

What you will do

• Advise product and engineering teams on online content safety, youth safety, platform laws, privacy, intellectual property, and AI regulation.
• Support product development and go-to-market strategies for digital and generative AI products, including risk mitigation.
• Develop and operationalize company-wide safety policies, regulatory monitoring, risk assessment frameworks, and legal playbooks.
• Coordinate responses to safety, privacy, and data security incidents, including investigations, notifications, and government or law enforcement inquiries.
• Track global AI, safety, and privacy regulations, map their impact, and lead compliance projects.
• Collaborate with policy, security, trust and safety, product, engineering, and regulatory teams to improve scalable legal review processes.

Requirements

• Legal qualification and 8+ years of experience practicing law, including in-house experience.
• Experience with online safety, privacy, platform, consumer, and digital product laws, including the Digital Services Act, UK and Australian Online Safety Acts, and GDPR.
• Deep understanding of modern AI technologies and products, including generative AI.
• Experience with data incidents and government authority requests.
• Ability to collaborate effectively across time zones and work from or relocate to Austin or San Francisco.
• Pragmatic, business-minded approach and ability to simplify complex compliance requirements.

Nice to have

• AIGP, CIPP/E, or a similar privacy or AI governance certification.
• Experience advising rapidly growing technology companies on privacy and product regulatory requirements.
• High comfort with technology and AI experimentation, or knowledge of Canva.
