TL;DR

Senior Structural Engineer (Nuclear): Designing and developing critical structures for a portable nuclear microreactor with an accent on thermomechanical integrity, material selection, and mass-efficient structural systems. Focus on finite element analysis, vibration and shock resistance, manufacturing integration, and testing structures that operate under extreme temperatures and tight volumetric constraints.

Location: 100% onsite at hirify.global’s headquarters in El Segundo, California, United States. Extended hours and weekends may be required when necessary.

Salary: $133,500–$184,800 per year, plus equity.

Company

hirify.global is a startup developing mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases.

What you will do

  • Own the design and development of critical shielding, container, graphite, and metallic structures for the Kaleidos microreactor.
  • Conduct trade studies, select materials, and develop designs that meet program requirements and volumetric constraints.
  • Perform static strength, durability, fatigue, vibration, shock, and other structural analyses using hand calculations and finite element tools.
  • Develop manufacturing and assembly instructions, test plans, and subassembly schedules.
  • Manage bills of materials, suppliers, subsystem risk analysis, and FMEA activities.
  • Coordinate with interdisciplinary engineering teams and communicate requirements, technical feedback, and design decisions clearly.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical, Civil, or Structural Engineering.
  • 6+ years of experience designing structures.
  • 4+ years of stress analysis experience using hand calculations and finite element tools such as Abaqus, Ansys, FEMAP, or similar.
  • Experience with thermomechanical analysis, including thermal expansion, static strength, durability, fatigue, vibration, and shock.
  • Experience with CAD-based multi-component assemblies, GD&T, free-body diagrams, and manufacturing or testing of hardware.
  • Must work 100% onsite in El Segundo and be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing hardware that has been manufactured, deployed, and iteratively improved.
  • Experience with NX or similar CAD software and text-based software development tools.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams and developing suppliers.

Culture & Benefits

  • Substantial incentive stock plan for full-time employees.
  • Comprehensive medical, vision, dental, life, accident, hospital, critical illness, commuter, FSA, and HSA benefits.
