Assistant Managing Editor (Data Journalism)

Salary: $104,800–$174,700 annual base pay for the New York home-based location; an annual incentive bonus may apply.

What you will do

• Lead and manage data reporters and editors across recurring data series and investigative projects.
• Set and maintain standards for reporting, writing, editing, production, accuracy, fairness, and narrative strength.
• Develop and pitch story and series ideas, guiding projects from concept through publication.
• Coach reporters and editors in data skills, reporting, writing, and editorial judgment.
• Review how data and statistical findings are interpreted and presented to readers.
• Coordinate with graphics, research, survey, and analytics specialists to publish clear, accurate stories on schedule.

Requirements

• 7–10+ years of relevant newsroom experience in data-driven or investigative reporting and editing.
• Leadership or team management experience in a newsroom.
• Strong editorial judgment and editing skills, especially for data-heavy stories.
• Ability to assess data quality, identify inconsistencies, and explain complex concepts to diverse audiences.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently while collaborating across teams.

Nice to have

• Experience editing or producing recurring data series or investigative projects.
• Familiarity with R or Python and data visualization techniques.
• Legal industry reporting or research experience.
• Strong organizational skills and experience managing multiple projects.
• Degree in journalism, public policy, political science, economics, statistics, or a related field.
