Senior Data Journalist (Fintech)

Location: Hybrid in New York City or San Francisco, United States

Salary: $150,000–$200,000 per year, plus equity

What you will do

• Build and own hirify.global's data storytelling function from data discovery through publication.
• Mine payments, merchant, and card member data to identify credible, non-promotional stories.
• Write production-grade SQL and dbt models and partner with data science on story-mining infrastructure.
• Design analyses covering sampling, statistical significance, outliers, and data quality.
• Define narrative pillars, story formats, publishing cadence, and distribution approaches.
• Collaborate with communications, brand, product marketing, data science, and leadership while maintaining editorial independence.

Requirements

• Demonstrated data journalism experience with a portfolio combining quantitative analysis and clear narrative writing.
• Advanced SQL and dbt skills, including production experience building and maintaining data models.
• Working knowledge of statistics, sampling, significance testing, and observational-data pitfalls.
• Python or equivalent scripting ability for data transformation and analysis.
• Ability to independently QA work and create reproducible, version-controlled, defensible analyses.
• Strong writing, independent execution, and comfort building a new function in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with dbt testing frameworks, pipeline orchestration, or analytics infrastructure.
• Data visualization or graphic design skills.
• Background in economics, applied statistics, consumer finance, or payments.
• Experience at a media outlet, think tank, nonprofit, or established data journalism organization.
