Sr. Process Safety Consultant (PHA)

Location: Columbia, Maryland, United States; willingness to travel 25–50% for client engagements and onsite PHA sessions.

Salary: $110,000–$175,000 USD annually.

What you will do

• Lead and perform PHAs using HAZOP, What-If, LOPA, and FMEA methodologies.
• Manage the full PHA lifecycle, including preparation, team coordination, study execution, documentation, and follow-up recommendations.
• Assess flammable liquids, reactive chemistry, toxic and flammable releases, pressure relief systems, and high-hazard materials.
• Review P&IDs, PFDs, material data, operating procedures, and other process safety information.
• Prepare and peer-review PHA reports for clients and regulatory authorities.
• Conduct site visits, support compliance evaluations, and contribute to proposals and client engagements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Process Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of process safety experience with direct involvement in conducting or facilitating PHAs.
• Recognized certification in PHA leadership.
• Experience with PHA software and process safety regulations, including US OSHA PSM and EPA requirements.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts.
• Willingness to travel 25–50% for client engagements and onsite PHA sessions.

Nice to have

• Professional Engineer credentials such as PE.
• Functional safety credentials such as FS Eng, FSP, or CFSE.
• Experience with safety instrumented systems, SIL assignment and verification, and functional safety assessments.
• Engineering experience in oil and gas, chemical, pulp and paper, industrial gases, or pharmaceutical industries.
• Client management and proposal development experience.
