Staff Engineer (Backend)

Location: Kaunas office, 3 days per week

Salary: €4,500–€6,667 gross monthly, plus approximately 10% annual bonuses and a Booking Holdings RSU package worth $20,000 gross.

What you will do

• Design and evolve shared backend platform capabilities, frameworks, and runtime patterns for engineering teams.
• Set platform direction for Java code structure, service architecture, Spring Boot services, and standardized runtime practices.
• Improve CI/CD workflows, pull request quality gates, release practices, and developer velocity.
• Contribute to multi-cluster deployment, faster pod startup, on-demand test environments, secure service communication, and AI-driven observability.
• Lead architecture discussions, review technical proposals, mentor engineers, and align teams around platform standards.

Requirements

• 6+ years of backend or platform engineering experience, preferably with Java or a similar ecosystem.
• Strong experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems.
• Deep hands-on experience with Kubernetes and cloud-native infrastructure.
• Strong knowledge of backend service architecture, API and service design, CI/CD, release engineering, testing, observability, and reliability.
• Experience leading through influence, writing and reviewing technical proposals, and collaborating with engineering leaders, product teams, and cross-functional stakeholders.
• Ability to work from the Kaunas office 3 days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience with Spring, Spring Boot, and modern JVM performance practices.
• Experience with multi-cluster deployments, zero-trust service communication, Kubernetes-hosted developer environments, or ephemeral test environments.
