Senior Safety Design Software Architect (Autonomous Vehicles)

TL;DR

Senior Safety Design Software Architect (Embedded/AV): Leading and supporting safety initiatives across all system development phases for core AV software with an accent on safety analysis and runtime safety requirements. Focus on developing safe software solutions for future vehicles and ensuring adherence to functional safety standards like ISO 26262.

Location: Must be based in Canada. Remote within the country, but hybrid (3 days onsite) is required for those within 80km of the Markham or Oshawa Hubs.

Salary: $115,000 – $164,600 CAD

What you will do

• Conduct software safety analyses and define runtime safety requirements in collaboration with engineers and suppliers.
• Ensure software safety requirements are complete, consistent, and aligned with system-level safety goals.
• Support software teams in design, implementation, and testing to verify that safety requirements are met.
• Ensure strict adherence to GM’s internal safety and software development processes.
• Lead and contribute to the continuous improvement of safety processes, methods, and tools.

Requirements

• 5+ years of embedded systems development experience in safety-critical domains (automotive, aerospace, medical, or nuclear).
• Proficiency in C/C++ embedded programming.
• Familiarity with ISO 26262 or other functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 62304, or DO-178C.
• Experience across the full software development lifecycle (requirements, design, coding, verification).
• Must be based in Canada; GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

Nice to have

• Experience with safety analysis methods such as HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, and STPA.
• Knowledge of software architecture and design patterns.
• Experience with multi-core programming and real-time operating systems (RTOS).
• Knowledge of in-vehicle communication networks (CAN, FlexRay, LIN, Ethernet).
