TL;DR
Lead Senior Software Engineer - Full Stack (Python, Java): Building the first production content-exchange bridge between the Library of Congress Enterprise Copyright System and Digital Library Services, with an accent on API integration, event-driven cloud pipelines, and content-addressable storage. Focus on designing versioned contracts across complex enterprise systems, modernizing CI/CD infrastructure, and leading hands-on development in a mixed Python/Django and Java architecture.
Location: Remote within the United States; core business hours are 8:30 AM–5:30 PM ET, Monday–Friday. Library of Congress IT security training and an NDA are required before system access.
Salary: $130,000–$142,000 per year, adjusted based on experience and project requirements.

What you will do
- Lead a 3–5 person engineering team and make architecture decisions, establish coding standards, review code, and define quality gates.
- Design integration layers and versioned API client contracts connecting enterprise systems with different data models and release cycles.
- Develop production software across Python/Django and Java codebases for digital content, workflows, and collections.
- Build event-driven AWS processing pipelines using ECS Fargate, Lambda, S3, RDS, SNS/SQS, and Terraform-managed infrastructure.
- Modernize Jenkins and SonarQube CI/CD pipelines and implement content-addressable storage with fixity verification.
- Develop search and indexing capabilities with Solr or Elasticsearch while partnering with Product Owners in a federal Agile/SCRUM environment.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience in information system design, complex software development, and application programming for large-scale database systems.
- Production experience with Python and Django, Java, HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.
- Hands-on AWS experience including ECS Fargate, Lambda, S3, RDS, and SNS/SQS, plus Terraform Infrastructure as Code.
- Experience building CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins and security scanning with SonarQube.
- Experience with content-addressable storage, fixity verification, microservices, versioned APIs, backward compatibility, and graceful degradation.
- Must be able to work remotely from the United States during 8:30 AM–5:30 PM ET core hours and complete Library of Congress security training and an NDA.
Nice to have
- Experience delivering Library of Congress contracts under Library SDLC standards.
- Knowledge of digital preservation standards such as OAIS, PREMIS, and METS.
- Experience with malware scanning, checksum validation, format characterization tools, or content preservation pipelines.
- Experience with TypeScript, React, Angular, or migrating Jenkins pipelines to GitLab CI/CD.
