Director, Software Engineering (Payments)

Location: US - Bellevue, WA; hybrid position requiring at least 3 days in the office. Travel is required 5–10% of the time.

Salary: $186,800–$299,200 USD per year, with potential bonus, equity, and sales incentive payments where applicable.

What you will do

• Lead the design, implementation, and deployment of secure, reliable payment acceptance products and distributed platforms.
• Stay hands-on with architecture, design and code reviews, troubleshooting, production readiness, and critical delivery decisions.
• Define technical strategy for payment processing and acceptance platforms while aligning execution with product and business priorities.
• Improve engineering practices across development, testing, deployment, observability, monitoring, incident response, and operational readiness.
• Apply AI/ML, Generative AI, and automation to improve developer productivity and business outcomes.
• Build, coach, and develop geographically distributed engineering teams and technical leaders.

Requirements

• 10+ years of relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 13+ years of relevant experience.
• Experience leading software engineering teams, including hiring, people management, coaching, performance development, and delivery accountability.
• Deep experience designing and operating highly available, scalable, secure, and resilient distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience with Java/J2EE, Spring Boot, Vert.x, REST APIs, Kafka, Hazelcast, containers, Kubernetes, cloud platforms, CI/CD, and test automation.
• Experience with event-driven architecture, high-throughput transaction processing, API-first product development, and operational excellence.
• Experience with payment processing or financial technology, security practices, PCI-DSS, SOX, compliance, risk, and operational controls.

Nice to have

• Advanced degree or a PhD.
• Experience implementing or governing AI/ML, Generative AI, or agentic AI capabilities in production or engineering workflows.
• Experience with payment network protocols, acceptance workflows, transaction matching, replay, idempotency, dead-letter queues, and exactly-once processing.
