Staff Software Engineer (Fintech)

TL;DR

Staff Software Engineer (Java/Kong): Designing and operating the API Gateway and authentication layer for the Edge platform with an accent on security, scalability, and high availability. Focus on building secure OAuth2/OIDC flows, implementing Kong Lua plugins, and integrating GenAI features into the platform.

Location: Hybrid - London, United Kingdom (minimum 3 days in office)

What you will do

• Design and maintain Edge platform components including Kong API gateway (Lua plugins) and Java/Spring Boot microservices.
• Implement secure authentication and authorization services using OAuth2/OIDC and mutual TLS.
• Lead code reviews, enforce coding standards, and mentor teammates on API gateway patterns and Java.
• Develop and iterate on GenAI and agentic features from proof-of-concept to production using guardrailed AI tooling.
• Own observability via Datadog and manage on-call incident response for the critical API path.
• Translate functional requirements into robust system designs and technical solutions.

Requirements

• 5+ years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s degree (or 8+ years without).
• Strong Java backend engineering skills (Java 17+, Spring Boot).
• Demonstrable experience with API gateway technology (Kong, NGINX, Apigee) and HTTP/REST/JWT/OAuth2 fundamentals.
• Experience with Kubernetes and service mesh concepts (Istio/Envoy preferred).
• Must be based in or able to work from the London office at least 3 days a week.
• Ability to work with emerging Generative AI tools (Claude Code, ChatGPT, Copilot) to support everyday work.
