Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Reliability Platform)

Location: Remote US; most roles can be performed almost anywhere within the country of employment. New hires attend an in-person onboarding experience, and some positions may occasionally require in-person work at an Affirm office.

Base pay: $195,000–$255,000 USD per year in CA, WA, NY, NJ, and CT; $173,000–$233,000 USD per year in other U.S. states.

What you will do

• Design and build a next-generation reliability platform for Affirm’s production systems.
• Own and deliver quarterly team goals, lead engineers through ambiguous and open-ended problems, and support delivery.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics on ideation, technical constraints, risks, and trade-offs.
• Identify and solve project, process, technology, and business issues.
• Support service operations and availability through metrics, escalation, keep-the-lights-on work, and on-call efforts.
• Improve code review and design standards, share practices through writing and tech talks, and develop team talent through feedback and guidance.

Requirements

• 4+ years of total software engineering experience.
• Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using technologies such as Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Experience shipping web applications with declarative UI frameworks such as React or Vue.
• Practical experience using LLMs or AI frameworks to improve automation and guidance with guardrails and citations.
• Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components using elegant, simple, and extensible designs.
• Ability to write high-quality, understandable, reusable code and make significant changes safely in large codebases.
• Experience developing tools and practices that enable safe large-scale codebase changes.
• Proactive ownership of professional growth and feedback-seeking from teammates, managers, and stakeholders.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.
• Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
